Driving Instructor Training

Echo Driving Instructor Training

If you are looking at this page, than you are looking to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). However, before you start your journey you need to know the legal requires of becoming an ADI.

  • hold a full UK or European Union (EU/European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence

  • Have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying.

  • Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered in the Register.

  • Be a “fit and proper” person to have your name entered in the Register.

  • Pass the two qualifying practical examinations within two years of passing the theory examination

  • Apply for registration within 12 months of passing the final part of the examination.

ADI Exams:

The qualification exam has three parts:

  • Theory test (which is a computer based multipal-choose questions and hazard perception)

  • The Practical driving test (which requires a high level of driving skill).

  • A Practical test of your 'ability to instruct'.

In order to become an Approved driving instructor you must take and pass all three parts of the examination within a 2 year period from the date of passing your theory exam. If you are fail to complete all three examinations with the 2 year limit you must start again from the beginning and pass each part again. The good news is that you can take the theory test as many times as you like, however, the other two exam are limited to a maximum of three attempts so you need to make sure that you are ready to take the test.

The Driving standards agency has published the overall pass rate for each exam: 2006/2007

  • Theory test (part 1): 49%

  • Test of driving ability (part 2): 45%

  • Test of instructional ability (part 3): 28%

From the above it is evident that the qualifying exams are very difficult so make sure that you choose an ADI Trainer who in the Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT).
